At The Village Therapy Place, we aim to make mealtimes a positive and enjoyable experience!

We like using the Sequential Oral Sensory Approach to Feeding Program, because it is fun for kids, supportive to parents and it works!

SOS is an evidence-based program that was developed over 30 years ago by Dr. Kay Toomey. It looks at all aspects of a child’s development, and utilizes play, which is the best way for kids to learn.

Eating is a very complex process that uses all our senses, all of our organs, and multiple systems in our body – which all have to be working correctly. We work with children and their families to figure out which system or systems are not doing their part and create customized plans to remedy the issues.

What are some of the signs that your child might need feeding therapy?

  • an infant who cries or resists at most feedings.

  • a child over 18 months who is drinking most of their nutrition.

  • a child over 18 months who eats mostly baby food purees and has not transitioned to solid foods.

  • a child who has less than 20 foods they will eat.

  • a child that is fed by an NG or G-tube.

  • a child who has an ongoing failure to gain weight or ongoing weight loss.

  • a child who avoids foods based on texture.

  • ongoing choking, coughing, or gagging during meals.

  • when getting your child to eat is a constant battle.
