One of the most common things parents tell us is:
"I know he understands me...he just doesn't talk."
Maybe your child follows directions.
Brings you their shoes when you ask.
Knows exactly where their favorite snack is.
Laughs at funny moments.
Seems to understand everything happening around them.
But when it comes to talking...
Very little comes out.

Language development has two important parts:
Receptive language—what children understand.
Expressive language—what children are able to say.
These skills often develop together, but not always at the same pace.
Some children understand far more than they're able to express.
That can be frustrating for both children and parents.
Communication is about much more than words.
Children communicate through gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, pointing, bringing you objects, and even the way they look at you.
Those are wonderful foundations for spoken language.
Parents can encourage expressive language by:
• Pausing before giving your child what they want.
• Narrating everyday routines.
• Reading together every day.
• Expanding on the words your child already uses.
• Celebrating every attempt to communicate.
Most importantly...
Keep communication fun.
Children learn language best through joyful interactions, not pressure.
