Erika Oloumi

Speech Therapist MS, CCC-SLP, TSSLD

I graduated with my Masters in Communication Science from Hunter College, CUNY in 2005. I began my career in the Pediatric Rehabilitation unit of a hospital and spent over 10 years learning and growing as a therapist.

Although my academic training was mostly in speech and language, I quickly realized that children develop as a beautiful, moving and complicated whole.  I have treated a variety of medical and developmental diagnoses, from infants in the NICU and onward.  In addition to addressing communication issues, I have training in the SOS approach to feeding. I am passionate about making eating a nutritious and enjoyable experience. Feeding is a complex skill.  By getting to know and understand a family, I believe we can achieve mealtime success.

As a professional, I am always seeking knowledge. Faced with the pandemic and the challenges of virtual learning, I chose to continue my education at the Institute for Multisensory Education and Fairleigh Dickinson University. I am currently pursuing a second Masters degree in Literacy Studies and Certification as an Orton Gillingham Teacher. Given my extensive background in phonological awareness and language development, I take a unique approach to fostering early literacy skills, decoding, and reading comprehension. I find that a direct, multi-sensory approach to reading is beneficial for nearly all learners
