Pediatric physical therapists have specific and advanced training to enhance and advance the lives of children who present with impairments that are a result of congenital and/or acquired diagnoses. These diagnoses often include neurologic, cardiac and physical components. Children born with congenital conditions may exhibit low muscle tone, poor coordination, visual perception deficits, cognitive developmental delays, impaired muscle strength (weakness) and speech impairments. Pediatric physical therapy goals are individual for each child and may include improvements in developmental activities, motor learning, balance and coordination, body awareness and proprioception, posture, cardiopulmonary endurance, daily routines and equipment design.
