Pictures! Fun to Look At and Can Help Your Child Get Better at Making Inferences Too!

Pictures!

The Tool:

This is a tool we all have! Pictures are everywhere…use old family photographs, pictures from wordless picture books, or pictures you find online. The options are endless!

How Does This Help with Inferencing?

The old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” is so true! The picture cannot directly tell us what is going on, but the details tell it all! Pictures are generally an easier way to practice making inferences. Because the clues are all visual (i.e., not reliant on words/language), it is easier for children with language disorders/delays to practice making inferences.

How to Play:

Look at each picture and ask your child a question to get started, such as “when do you think this picture was taken?” or “where do you think they are?”. If your child gets the answer correctly on his own, ask “how did you know that? What clues the picture helped you figure it out?” It is often easier for a child to figure out the answer, but more challenging to verbally express how he figured it out. Other children may have difficulty figuring out the answer, but may be able to name clues in the picture.

Here are some example pictures, questions, and inferences:

Where is the girl?

How did you know she’s at a birthday party?

How did you know she is the birthday girl?

How old is she turning?

Talk about the clues (e.g., the cake has candles) and the background knowledge you used (e.g. usually only birthday cakes have candles) to make the inference.

When was this picture taken?

What is the family going to do?

What holiday was this taken on?

Talk about the clues (e.g., I see red, white, and blue) and the background knowledge (e.g. people celebrate the 4th of July using American colors) used to make the inference.
