Shhhhhh- Vocal Rest to Keep Your Voice Healthy

Healthy Choice for a Healthy Voice!

Authored By Elise Weinstein, M.S., CCC-SLP, Speech Therapist at The Village Therapy Place

Looking for other healthy choices to support a healthy voice?

Though it may seem counterintuitive, whispering actually puts a lot of strain on your voice. Try speaking in a quiet voice instead of whispering.

If your throat is bothering your or if your voice feels strained, you may want to try vocal rest instead. Giving your voice a chance to rest will give it time to heal. Not everyone needs full vocal rest (i.e. no talking at all for a period of time), but even partial vocal rest can help your voice get better faster.

How can you engage in vocal rest?

1)     Choose email and text over phone calls.

2)     Use a whiteboard or doodle board/table to write to others throughout the day.

3)     Choose quiet activities (reading, jogging, sewing, listening to music, etc.) instead of more verbal, interactive ones (singing, parties, phone calls, etc.).
